The Ultimate Guide to Writing your Perfect Vows
Writing your wedding vows can be a daunting task.
Here’s a few simple tips to keep in mind so that you can say everything you want to include about your future husband or wife–and say it in a concise, meaningful, and memorable way.
Brainstorm
Before you start tackling the first sentence, start with brainstorming. Think about a special memory you have with your significant other. Jot down the things that first come to mind when you think about the absolute best things about her/him. Talk about what you’re excited for in the future. Include some personal anecdotes that will make your vows memorable, and endearing to both your loved one and inevitably the audience.
Don’t worry about sounding too refined–or too cliché
Ultimately, these vows are a promise to just your future wife or husband. Feel free to make it completely conversational–it will be that much more personal and touching when you’re saying them at the altar!
Actually make promises, and don’t forget to say “I love you”
This may be implied, but don’t forget what these vows are meant for. These lifelong promises are important to convey not only to your loved one, but to your guests as well.
If you’re stumped, find inspiration in other people’s vows
There’s no harm in seeing how others have pledged their love! The Knot has a couple of examples that we might need to take note of, too.
Practice, practice, practice
Taking the time to read your vows out loud will allow yourself to find a rhythm–and correct any hiccups in the rhythm–throughout your speech. Becoming more and more comfortable with the words you wrote will inevitably make saying your vows a more memorable experience.
